The Girl in the Red Coat
Love Is Like a Violin
They say Love Is Like a Violin,
Its sweetest music gently grows.
The day I met the girl in red,
A lifetime’s melody arose.
Happiness
You became my Happiness,
The smile that greeted every dawn.
Though silver now has touched our hair,
The love between us carries on.
Tears
We’ve shared our share of Tears, my love,
For joys and sorrows hand in hand.
Yet every drop became a pearl,
Polished by time’s forgiving hand.
The River
Like the River life flowed on,
Past youthful dreams and changing skies.
Its waters carried us together,
Growing wiser in our eyes.
Promises
The Promises we made as two
Were never written, never signed.
They lived within the lives we built,
With faithful hearts and steadfast minds.
More Than Love
Ours became More Than Love,
A friendship deep as ancient trees.
A thousand quiet, selfless acts,
Carried softly on the breeze.
Let Me Cry on Your Shoulder
Whenever burdens weighed me down,
Or troubled days grew hard to bear,
You never had to speak the words—
Your shoulder always waited there.
Broken-hearted
We’ve known what it is to feel Broken-hearted,
As every family sometimes must.
Yet every storm we weathered well
Strengthened hope and deepened trust.
When Love Comes Round Again
They ask if When Love Comes Round Again
I’d choose another road to roam.
I’d find the girl in the red coat,
And walk once more with her toward home.
Just Out of Reach
One day you’ll be Just Out of Reach,
Beyond the sunset’s golden light.
Until that day, we’ll share this road,
Still hand in hand, from morn till night.
Still Riding the Roads of Love
Though seasons turned and years rolled by,
Our journey never lost its way.
The girl in the red coat held my hand,
And love still lit each passing day.
Our Greatest Song
No chart could ever tell our tale,
Nor fame outshine the life we’d known.
For every day we shared as one
Became the sweetest song we’ve sown.
Paul Baldry
I wrote this poem to celebrate my wife’s 70th birthday, a heartfelt tribute to the love of my life. What began as individual verses soon took on a life of its own, each inspired by one of our favourite love song titles. Every title became the heart of a verse, telling the story of our journey from youth to… let’s just say, old enough to know we’ve done it right. The girl in the red coat still walks beside me, and together we’re still travelling the roads of love, one precious memory at a time. The image shows my wife shortly after our marriage, alongside a recreation of her wearing the red coat that inspired this poem.
