Rough edges may hide a young heart warm and kind,
With tenderness sometimes not easy to find.
Behind all the noise,
Are sensitive boys,
With more in their hearts than first comes to mind.
Their eyes hold a universe waiting to shine,
With endless adventures and dreams to define.
They gaze at the skies,
With wonder-filled eyes,
Believing the whole world is theirs by design.
Through life’s twisting maze they determinedly go,
With courage to face what they don’t yet know.
Though pathways may bend,
They’ll follow each end,
Discovering themselves as they grow.
With energy bursting, they’re off on their way,
Conquering worlds through adventures each day.
From sunrise till night,
Every challenge feels right,
And tomorrow brings somewhere new they can play.
Those mischievous grins tell of trouble and fun,
Of escapades started before they are done.
Each tale they create,
Becomes something great—
A memory to treasure when boyhood has gone.
By Paul Baldry
This poem grew from my memories of boyhood, when every day seemed to hold another adventure. We were noisy, mischievous, curious and forever testing the boundaries, yet beneath those rough edges were kindness, imagination and dreams. We explored our world with little fear and endless energy, never realising that those scrapes, friendships and adventures would one day become treasured memories of the boys we once were.
