A Love of Fishing
In Nottinghamshire, where magic sings,
Lived Charlie Shoe and Samson Sock, who bring
Laughter and warmth with their golden threads,
Together they fished where the riverbed spreads.
With cookies and honey as bait in their hands,
They dreamed of catching Bob, ruler of the lands.
Bob was a pike, clever and sly,
Dodging their hooks as he swam on by.
Samson would giggle, all full of glee,
While Charlie whispered, “Just trust in me.”
They sailed on the water, spirits so bright,
Hoping to spot Bob, what a magical sight!
But Bob danced away; he wouldn’t be caught,
Yet Charlie’s cleverness succeeded where others had not.
At last, they caught him, but with hearts so true,
They set him back free, for respect had grown too.
Now by the shore, as the sun starts to gleam,
Charlie and Samson still fish and dream.
In Nottinghamshire, their tale carries on,
Of a shoe and a sock, where true friendships are born.
Paul Baldry
This whimsical tale is inspired by a dear friend, Glen Buxton, who sadly passed away many years ago. Beneath the playful characters of Charlie Shoe and Samson Sock lies the memory of a fishing trip we once shared. Truth be told, the day was something of a disaster from start to finish, yet it remains one of my fondest memories. Filled with laughter, mishaps, and friendship, it reminds me that the best adventures are not measured by what we catch, but by the moments we share along the way.
