Guiding Lights. —

Reflections on Youth, Courage and Life’s Journey. —

When we are young, the road seems endless,
With distant dreams beyond our sight,
We chase the sun towards tomorrow,
Still searching for our guiding light.

We stand between the child and grown-up,
Not quite knowing who we’ll be,
With restless hearts and endless questions,
And dreams of what the world might see.

We think that life should hold the answers,
That every turning should be clear,
But growing up is not that simple,
It’s learning how to face our fear.

For every road will have its crossroads,
And some will lead us far astray,
Yet even wrong turns have their lessons,
To help us find a better way.

We’ll make mistakes and sometimes stumble,
We’ll fall where others seem to stand,
But strength is found in rising slowly,
With wiser eyes and steadier hands.

And there’ll be times we feel we’re failing,
When others seem so far ahead,
When every dream feels out of reach,
And doubts run circles in our head.

But never judge your own life’s journey
By roads that other people take,
For every soul must find its pathway,
And learn from every choice they make.

The world may try to rush you forward,
To make you run before you crawl,
But wisdom isn’t born in hurry,
It grows through learning from each fall.

Confidence is seldom given,
It comes like dawn across the sky,
A little light through darkest hours,
A quiet voice that says, “I’ll try.”

Dream your dreams without restriction,
Let hope reach further than your fears,
But know that character means far more
Than praise that fades across the years.

For life will test your heart and patience,
And sometimes leave you wondering why,
Yet courage isn’t never fearing,
It’s finding strength enough to try.

You’ll meet with anger and frustration,
And words that wound more than they should,
But calmness often wins the battles
That rage and fury never could.

Be kind to those who walk beside you,
And those whose troubles go unseen,
For kindness planted in our younger days
Can grow beyond our wildest dreams.

And when you see another struggling,
Remember where your feet have been,
The scars you carry from your journey
May help someone through days unseen.

For those who’ve walked the hardest pathways
Can sometimes have the gentlest hearts,
They know the weight of silent sorrow,
And how a little kindness starts.

Don’t fear the mountains in the distance,
Nor feel ashamed to start out slow,
The greatest heights are climbed in stages,
One careful step before we grow.

And when your carefully laid plans crumble,
When life takes turns you never knew,
Remember that the unexpected
May open doors once closed to you.

For growing older comes with seasons,
The passing years will leave their trace,
But growing wiser takes decisions,
And learning when to change our pace.

It’s in the choices made in silence,
The little things we choose to do,
The times we stand for what is decent,
When no one’s watching what we do.

And one day, looking back behind you,
Across the years your feet have known,
You’ll see the storms that once defeated you
Were where your deepest strengths were grown.

You’ll understand those youthful worries,
The broken dreams, the tears you shed,
Were not the end of all your journeys,
But stepping stones to roads ahead.

And if a younger soul should ask you
How to face the years to come,
Don’t promise skies without their thunder,
Nor roads forever warmed by sun.

Just tell them life is worth the living,
That every failure has its place,
That courage grows from trying again,
And kindness gives our strength its grace.

For we were never born with wisdom,
Nor handed maps to see us through,
We learned by walking through the darkness,
Until the morning came in view.

And if there’s one thing life has taught me,
Through all the years I’ve travelled through,
It’s that the light we seek in others
May be the light that shines in you.

Now, walk your road with hope and courage,
Let kindness guide the things you do,
And when your own young years are over,
Become a guiding light for someone new.

Guiding Lights — Reflections on Youth, Courage and Life’s Journey

Growing up is a journey filled with dreams, uncertainty, mistakes and discovery. None of us begins life with all the answers, and the road to adulthood is rarely straight or easy.

My spoken-word poem Guiding Lights reflects on those formative years when we search for confidence, courage and our place in the world.

Through life’s crossroads, disappointments and small victories, we gradually discover that wisdom is not something we are born with. It is something we earn through experience, kindness, perseverance and the courage to try again.

This poem is a message of encouragement to young people finding their way, but also a reflection for those of us who have travelled further down life’s road.

For perhaps the greatest lesson of all is that the wisdom we gain along our own journey can one day become a guiding light for someone else.

Self‑Discovery and Identity — “What Was and What Will Be

The Future You Create

The future waits in quiet clay,
Shaped by the hands that work today.

No distant star can chart your way,
Like choices made along the day.

Each step becomes tomorrow’s view,
The future lives in what you do.
